Paleoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic phosphorite depositional systems in Brazil, genetic processes and application in agriculture

Abstract

This project aims to study deposits of phosphorites and phosphate rocks from different geological contexts and ages (Paleo and Neoproterozoic) in Brazil, with an emphasis on deposits from the Corumbá Group, of Ediacarana age. Much is known about modern phosphogenesis processes, but little is known about precambrian phosphorites and the study of these deposits, of different ages, may contribute to fill this knowledge gap. The project will be developed within the scope of the interpretation of depositional systems, through the description and interpretation of sedimentary facies complemented by detailed petrographic and geochemical investigation (larger elements, EER's and C, O, Cr and Sr isotopes), aiming at understanding the phosphogenetic processes. The integrated approach of geochemical and sedimentological studies, with petrographic control of what will be analyzed, is necessary due to the characteristics of the autigenic sedimentation. In this type of sedimentation, mineral precipitation can occur directly from the water column or below the sediment / water interface, which influences the interpretation of the obtained geochemical data. The present project is linked to the GRDP (GRIND - Geological Research through Integrated Neoproterozoic Drilling: Ediacaran - Cambrian Transition), by the ICDP, which will allow the expansion of the investigation to the study of testimonies to be obtained. It is expected, with this proposal, to advance not only in the understanding of phosphogenesis, processes that are still poorly understood, but also in the use of this mineral good in agriculture, when proposing the analysis of the response of different lithotypes in remineralization and soil fertilization, procedures that are still little used in Brazil. Numerous phosphate deposits in Brazil have relatively low levels, which prevent the use in the production of fertilizers, but demonstrate the potential for use in rock that, on the other hand, still depend on agronomic tests as proposed in the present project.
