Abstract

Rio Ivaí Group consists of three Formations: Alto Garças, Iapó and Vila Maria. The main outcrops of this group, in the north flank of the Paraná basin, are in a narrow belt with approximately east-west direction. This belt stretches approximately 150 km in cliffs of hills and in waterfalls, where one can find the type-section; supplementary type-section in the Aldeia creek; and the Três Barras Farm section. Other important sections are also located on the northern flank of the Paraná basin, namely the section of the COHAB neighborhood and the section of Morro do Cristo and CINDACTA in the city of Barra do Garças, Mato Grosso State. Although there are publications dealing with the formal characterization of the Rio Ivaí Group units, as well as the paleontological content of their lithostratigraphic units, there are still important issues related to its macro- and micropaleontological content, the dating of the events and about theu global correlation of the fauna and flora, that still needs attention. Since the late 1970s some studies have been developed to characterize the paleontological content of the Vila Maria Formation, such as the analysis of myospores, as well as acritarchs that were interpreted as indicators of Llandoverian age (Eoaeronian - Telychian) for the entire Vila Maria Formation. More recent micropaleontological data points to two species of ostracods in the basal portion of the Vila Maria Formation, as well as at the top of the Iapó Formation. The species described are Conchoprimitia circularis Adôrno & Salas, 2016, and Satiellina paranaensis Adôrno & Salas, 2016, are both restricted to the Ordovician worldwide. New data on brachiopods also point to a Late Ordovician age of these strata. So, the present project aims to add new information based on the integration of bibliographical data and on new discoveries, addressing topics such as taphonomy, paleobiodiversity, fossildiagenesis, taxonomy and biostratigraphy for this important lito-chrono-biostatigraphic interval represented by the Rio Ivaí Group in central Brazil. New paleobiogeographic data for the Gondwana is also aimed. (AU)
