Abstract

Monitoring emerging pollutants in water and in the environment is crucial for human health as they can produce serious damage in human health. During this pandemic of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) and, as a consequence, the severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the consumption, and consequent elimination, of several specific drugs for the treatment of this viral infection, as well as its psychological effects inherent in human beings, constitutes a new threat to the environment and to the water supply. Thus, the monitoring and quantification of these new pollutants in water supplies are desirable, due to the lack of specific legislation for the presence of these pollutants in food. Thus, the present project aims to develop a set of electrochemical sensors for the monitoring of drugs of three important classes (antibiotics - azithromycin, amoxicillin, and levofloxacin - antidepressants - paroxetine, trazodone, and chlorpromazine - and corticoids - methylprednisolone, dextamethasone and hydrocortisone), consumed during the pandemic, in samples of supply water. The fabrication of the device will be carried out from the screen-printing process widely used to obtain miniaturized devices in a large-scale production. To improve the electrochemical performance of the device, it is intended to modify the electrode surface with carbon nanospheres doped with sulfur and nitrogen. (AU)
