Open and citizen science at schools

Abstract

The adoption of inquiry-based teaching sequences (IBTSs) linked to citizen science in schools can enhance science learning by placing students on genuine inquiry questions. However, there are no learning materials containing these IBTSs and citizen science protocols suitable for the school context available in Portuguese. Additionally, citizen science actions in progress in schools, as well as the data produced by them, end up being isolated from each other because there is no adequate information technology structure for teachers and students to submit and share data and results. The present project intends, over four years and with a multidisciplinary team: 1. The co-production (between basic education teachers and scientists) of IBTSs containing citizen science protocols suitable for application in a school context (Year 01); 2. The evaluation of the process of co-construction, among scientists, programmers and teachers of basic education, of a citizen science platform for use in schools (Year 01); 3. The insertion of IBTSs containing ready and tested citizen science protocols on the platform so that they can be used by basic education teachers (Year 02); 4. The pilot test of the use of the citizen science educational platform developed, with the use of these previously inserted IBTSs (Year 02); 5. Offering and evaluating a training process for the use of the developed platform, with the training of teachers to create and insert new citizen science protocols of interest to the platform (Years 02 and 03); 6. Learning assessment based on data from evaluation questionnaires answered by users registered on the platform (Year 03); and 7. The analysis of the data, referring to the scientific questions under investigation, inserted in the open platform by the citizen scientists (Years 03 and 04). At the end of the project, it is intended that the citizen science platform will allow the use and sharing of data between schools in different Brazilian regions, as well as the customization of IBTSs by teachers who are trained to use it.
