Abstract

Considering the persistent and complex challenges resulting from the climate emergency, several social actors are placed as central both in its promotion and mitigation. However, the meanings established by these actors about the role of science and technology in combating climate change are also diverse. This proposal assumes that research on science, technology, and society (STS) relationships that focus on the co-construction of understandings and responses to environmental and climate change can contribute to promoting new human/environment relationships. In our sample, based on public S&T communication, we sought to understand the modes of social participation in the co-creation of media on biodiversity conservation and climate change that collaborate for full, equitable, fair, and inclusive participation in decision-making, with particular consideration of gender, race/ethnicity and geolocation issues. Assuming scientific dissemination as a cultural process, we used the Circuit of Culture to analyze the production, consumption, regulation, representation, and identity processes in co-creating media involving socio-environmental issues in Itanhaém (SP). The research adopts a quali-quanti approach, developed with residents active in their territories by creating an Environmental Agency in the municipality. The Agency will seek to establish itself as a unifier of discussions on local and regional socio-environmental themes, bringing together researchers and local actors to generate information sharing, identify knowledge gaps, map alternatives and opportunities, and project possible futures. With this investigation, we hope to contribute to understanding how subjects with different approaches to the scientific world build their critical reading on biodiversity conservation and the climate emergency through their participation in the co-creation of media. In addition, it will be possible to generate evidence for proposing actions and public policies in S&T public communication based on the voices and practices of different social actors. (AU)
