Multimodality in the arguments of undergraduate chemistry students on polymeric films

Abstract

Currently, in the area of science education, there is a consensus on the understanding of the relevance of developing argumentation skills, considering that this encourages, among other aspects, the construction of knowledge. Most of the investigations carried out in the area take students' oral or written arguments as their object of study, without considering the multimodal manifestations that permeate it. This project aims to bridge the study of argumentation with the field of multimodal discourse analysis, with the objective to investigate how the argumentation of chemistry undergraduates is carried out using different multimodal resources (images, texts, gestures etc.) while they present solutions for interrupted case studies on the topic of polymeric films. To this end, transcripts of videos of oral presentations of case resolutions and slides produced by students will be analyzed, based on studies developed by Lilian Pozzer (University of Manitoba, Canada), which is a reference in research on multimodality. The data that will be analyzed were collected within the scope of another project subsidized by FAPESP (2023/01936-1), which will speed up research activities. (AU)
