Inflammatory profile, adipokines and microRNAs in the colostrum of women with gestational diabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional study

Abstract

Breast milk is an incomparable food with a complex, variable composition tailored to infants' needs. In addition to nutrients, it contains biologically active components. Maternal conditions such as obesity and diabetes mellitus can modify the composition of breast milk with clinical relevance for the infant's health in the short and long term. A cross-sectional study with a comparison control group will be carried out with the aim of evaluating the profile of microRNAs in colostrum; inflammation, adipokines and lipid profile in the blood of mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and comparing them with healthy mothers without GDM. Information will be collected on the mother's health, dietary intake and nutritional status. In the puerperium, blood will be collected from the mothers to determine inflammatory markers, adipokines, lipid profile and colostrum to determine the microRNA profile. It is expected that the microRNA profile of colostrum will be different in women who have had GDM during pregnancy compared to healthy mothers, and that it will be influenced by nutritional status, dietary intake, inflammation, adipokines and maternal lipid profile.
