Abstract

Odor and touch are the two primary senses used as criteria for purchasing cosmetic products. Until recently, investigating the effects of sensory perception was time-consuming and expensive. With the growing trend of using functional claims, many ingredient and cosmetic product manufacturers see the need to standardize, simplify, and digitize existing testing systems. There is a significant research gap regarding the prediction of human responses to olfactory and tactile stimuli in cosmetic products, to provide usable tools for the industry. The objective of this project is to digitally map the effects of sensory perception in test subjects using a combination of sensory and psychological tests, as well as physiological measurements. Machine learning will then be used to analyze and interpret the reactions. This will result in a digital standard for evaluating fragrances and basic formulations for use in the raw materials and cosmetics industries. With the help of the project results, odor and texture properties will be predictable in the future, saving time and costs, thus ensuring successful and efficient product development. UNIFESP and Fraunhofer IVV are working in ideal synergy on this research project. (AU)
