Abstract

This proposal, submitted by the Supramolecular Nanotech Lab of IQ-USP, focuses on the development of new functional molecular systems and on the assembly of their corresponding films and nanostructured materials, aiming their applications in sensors, energy and electronic devices. The Research Group conducted by Profs. Henrique E. Toma and Koiti Araki, has been composed by 14 graduate and 5 undergraduate students, 2 post-doctoral researchers and 1 technical manager, and has been actively working on the supramolecular chemistry of porphyrins, porphyrazines and related macrocycles; metal clusters and metal-polyimine complexes, as well as on the many implications in bioinorganic chemistry and advanced materials. In addition to a strong emphasis on supramolecular design and synthetic chemistry, the group is deeply involved in the investigation of relevant spectroscopic, photochemical, electrochemical and catalytic properties, using a great variety of experimental techniques and theoretical tools. Such properties will be suitably exploited in the design of useful devices, e.g. amperometric sensors, photoelectrochemical cells, optodes and logic gates, based on their corresponding molecular films generated by dip coating, electrostatic assembly, electropofymerization or intercalation methods. Research on interfacial chemistry, physics and electrochemistry constitutes a strategic issue pursued in the present proposal. In this sense, specific investiments are being planned to provide a full capability in the area of thin films. In addition to the exciting perspectives envisaged in the field of molecular nanotechnology, our proposal is also directed a better understanding of fundamental aspects of nanosciences, and is currently in progress thanks to the renewed support of FAPESP.
