Abstract

The field of structural impact in Brazil is still at large not well developed despite the capability of the local industry in designing products which are potentially users of such knowledge. This proposal explores this area of knowledge which is one of the most complexes in Solid Mechanics. We aim to study the response of shells both to axial and transverse impact loads. In the first case, the various buckling modes of strain rate sensitive shells will be mapped for a given set of initial and boundary conditions, geometry and material properties. The response of shells to axial impact has important applications in the areas of transportation, both of passengers and cargo. It will be also studied the structural response of pressurized shells undergoing transverse impact loads, with applications in the oil and gas industry. The approach to the set problem is theoretical, numerical and experimental. Theoretically, the buckling modes will be determined and a criterion capable of predicting material failure in the shells under transverse loading will be defined. A finite element programmer using an explicit method and specially developed for solid elements will be also derived. The code will take large rotations and strains, contact and viscous-plasticity into account and can be run remotely by the scientific community. The various tasks in this project will be followed closely by a large set of experiments. They are conceded with material characterization at strain rates as high as 10000/s, as well as with structural tests at velocities as high as 250m/s (950km/h). Besides the technical knowledge to be gained with this project, the team also aims at the formation of high qualified experts in the field of non-linear solid mechanics and experimental mechanics, at various levels ranging from masters to post-doc researchers. The team which will undertake this project represents the various expertises necessary to execute it. There will be three researchers from the University of São Paulo, one from the State University of Campinas and four other from Europe, with in depth specialized knowledge in finite elements, failure, contact, experimental mechanics and non-linear solid mechanics.
