Dimensions of the Portuguese Empire

Abstract

The project Dimensions of the Portuguese Empire aims to develop several research activities concerning the Portuguese Empire especially in the Atlantic area from its inception, with the circumnavigation of Africa in the 15th century, up to the first quarter of the 19th century when the Luso-Brazilian Empire was established in Rio de Janeiro. Nevertheless, it focuses on the period called the Early Modern Times (16th-18th centuries). Professors from the Department of History at USP, the Institute of Economics and the Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences at Unicamp, as well as researchers from Cebrap participate in the project. Activities will be held at Cátedra Jaime Cortesão - which is located at FFLCH-USP and is granted resources by the Instituto Camões in Lisbon -and also at the Economic History Center at the Institute of Economics (Unicamp).
