Analytical transmission electron microscope for spectroscopic nanocharacterization of materials

Abstract

This proposal aims to fund the expansion of the Electron Microscopy Facility operating at the LNLS (Grant FAPESP 96/04241-5) by the acquisition of a 200 kV Analytical TEM equipped with a Field Emission Gun (FEG), which will be configured for performing spectroscopic studies (Electron Energy Loss Spect., EELS; and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spect, EDX) with (sub)nanometer resolution. Many relevant basic/technological research projects can not be anymore developed at present at the LME and they depend on studies performed abroad. This new microscope will be fundamental to stay at state-of-art level in TEM based nanocharacterization of materials. This expansion of electron microscopy facility follows the suggestions of the International FAPESP Reviewing Committee formed by Prof. Gareth Thomas (University of Berkeley, USA) and Prof. Thomas Fidler (University of Vienna, Austria).
