Abstract

The present project aims to highlight the trajectory of social development in the country in the decade of the 1970s and 1980s based on the analysis of the evolution of a wide-ranging set of indicators of the health and nutrition of the population. The project, carried out by a multidisciplinary team of researchers, will involve the following stages: 1) construction of the evolution profile of the state of health and nutrition of the population (highlighting the characterization in the period of stages of "transition epidemiology” in the country); 2) identification of the evolution of the direct and indirect conditioning factors of health and nutrition (highlighting family income, availability of essential public services and fertility tendencies); 3) analysis of the causes between the conditioning factors and the state of health and nutrition (qualifying, and quantifying when possible, the relationship between different conditioning factors and different components of the state of health and nutrition); 4) conclusions, projections and recommendations. Diverse sources of data will be analyzed or re-analyzed by the project, including two national inquiries on health and nutrition (ENDEF, 1974/75 e PNSN, 1989), PNADs for several years, censuses of 70 and 80 and data from the civil register system and of the system of information on mortality in the Ministry of Health. The final product of the project will be the elaboration of a book on the paths of social development in Brazil in the seventies and eighties decades viewed from the perspective of the evolution of the state of health and nutrition in the population.
