Abstract
The project aims to develop methodologies in the fairly recent technique of Triple Stage Tandem Mass Spectrometry (EM/EM/EM or EM3) using for this purpose the most versatile of the instruments which is applied for this purpose; the pentaquadrupolar mass spectrometer. The study will involve ion/molecule reaction processes in conjunction with dissociation processes activated by collision (CID) with emphasis on its analytical applications. Through the unique and exceptional characteristics of this new instrument, the products of ion/molecule reactions in the gaseous phase can be analyzed both by CID as well as subsequent ion/molecule reactions. The sixteen different ways of EM3 sweep, with emphasis on the two-dimensional spectra, will be applied principally in studies of the reactivity of ions in the gaseous phase, and also in other studies such as the thermal degradation of polymers, differentiation of isomer ions, determination of thermodynamic properties with affinity for proton or other ions, among others. The acquisition of a DCI probe will enable the work with non volatile substances while the construction of a membrane probe will also enable the direct analysis of organic compounds present in aqueous solutions, as well as the study of the chemistry of stable species only in aqueous medium.
