The IEA-R1 nuclear reactor as a source of neutrons and its use in research, development and training of human resources

Abstract

A large number of basic and applied research programs and technological developments in the fields of Nuclear Physics, Radiochemistry, Biology, Materials Science, Nuclear Engineering, Environment among others have been undertaken in IPEN for several decades using the IEA-R1 Research Nuclear Reactor as a source of neutrons and gamma rays. In addition to the researchers from the Research Reactor Center (CRPq) and researchers from the other IPEN Centers, dozens of researchers belonging to other research institutions and universities in the country also use this installation and the associated infrastructure for their research activities. The use of the IPEN reactor, for research purposes, throughout these years has led to the training of some hundreds of masters and doctors not only in IPEN, but also in other research and teaching institutions in Brazil, in addition to the publication of a considerable number of scientific papers. The research and teaching activities using the nuclear reactor continue to be very strong and to attract the interest of new students in research into nuclear areas. The financial support granted by FAPESP for the research programs, using the Nuclear Reactor if added up within the ambit of IPEN and the other research institutions and universities in the state of São Paulo should reach some tens of millions of reals during the last few decades. The IEA-R1 Research Nuclear Reactor has been used intensively during more than 45 years (one of the oldest and one of the best used research reactors in the world, according to the evaluation of the International Atomic Energy Agency) for research activities and development. It is worth pointing out here that, in addition to research, the reactor has also been used intensively for the generation of different types of product and the provision of services, the most important among these being the production of primary radio-isotopes for the preparation of radio-drugs used in Nuclear Medicine. During the last 15 years the reactor has undergone several renovations in its systems and vital equipment due to wear through use and these renovations continue in view of the proposed raising of the power of the reactor from the present 2MW to 5MW and continuous operation of 120 hours per week. In 2002, IPEN's Research Reactor Center obtained the ISO 9001/2000 certification, awarded by the Fundação Vanzolini and became one of the first reactors in the world to obtain such certification.
