Abstract

Crop rotations and keeping the soil always covered are paramount for the success of the no-till system in tropical areas. In this way, relay crops and/or winter crops must be used in the rotation to produce grains or just to produce straw and maintain soil covering throughout the year. In Tropical regions, considering the temperature and rainfall, the decay of plant residues is very fast. The best indicators of cover straw quality for these regions are the ability to cover the soil soon after plant emergence, percentage of soil covering, residue persistence and ability to recycle nutrients. Nutrient recycling is very important as regarding soil fertility amelioration and maintenance in no-till systems. Besides, the straw accumulation in soil surface can be an alternative in correcting soil acidity and neutralize toxic aluminum. The intensive use of the soil under inadequate conditions can lead to formation of compacted layers, changing the chemical and, mainly, the physical characteristics of the soil. An alternative to reduce soil compaction is the use of rotations including cover crops with vigorous root systems, capable of grow in compacted soil layers with high penetration resistance and creating biopores where the roots of the next crop can grow. The present project was designed with the following objectives: provide a better understanding of straw decay dynamics and of nutriente recycling in agricultural production systems, as well as to evaluate its relevance in fertilizer management; to offer alternatives in fertilizer management as to optimize farm operations and nutrient use efficiency; to study liming techniques to enhance the efficiency of surface applied lime; to evaluate crop species, in field conditions, as to their ability to grow in compacted soil layers, as well as its effects on soil physical properties and root growth of the succeeding crop; to have a better understanding of the problems regarding seed production and technology in some cover crop species.
