Abstract

Fruit trade in Europe was standardized and only fruits that have been produced under the integrated production approach are allowed for the commerce. "Integrated pest management" is the basic strategy of fruit protection in integrated production systems. Recently in Brazil the "integrated pest and disease management" has also been suggested for integrated fruit production systems. However, the philosophy of the integrated pest management is not appropriate for quiescent diseases for which there is no economic damage threshold, the comer-stone of integrated management. The tactics employed in the control of quiescent diseases are based on the identification of the critical period for infection and on the post-harvest management. This project intends to develop and evaluate tactics for quiescent disease management in guava, citrus and peach, and to test and validate the biological control of pests in citrus. This project will operate as an embryo for the implementation of management systems that can be used in integrated fruit production. Experiments in vitro and in vivo for identification of the favorable environment for infection of citrus, guava and peach by Guignardia citricarpa, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and Monilinia fructicola, respectively, are proposed. Additionally, the spatio-temporal epidemic dynamics of citrus black spot, guava anthracnose, and brown rot of peach will be investigated. Assessment of damage caused by these diseases will be performed and disease forecast and warning systems will be developed and validated. The post-harvest management of guava anthracnose will be tested. The tactics employed in pest control include the distributions of natural enemies, for mites, pheromone traps, for citrus fruit borer, and disease forecast and warning systems, for Orthezia. (AU)
