Study of the reactivity of beta-Ca2SiO4 obtained from rice rull ash

Abstract

The major components of Portland cement are tricalcium silicate (Ca3SiO5) and dicalcium silicate (beta-Ca2SiO4). These materials correspond to about 70% of total Portland cement (Type I). This proposal deals with the synthesis conditions, reactivity and physical-chemical properties of beta-Ca2SiO4 obtained from rice hull ash. Rice hull is an abundant material containing about 25% of silica in its structure. The controlled-burning of this material allows the obtaining of silica having high reactivity. In earlier works a new method was developed showing that is possible the production of beta-Ca2SiO4 at temperature as low as 800oC using rice hull ash as raw-material. Furthermore, new calcium silicates, chemical and structural-related to beta-Ca2SiO4 were also prepared by the inclusion of foreign atoms in its structure. Titanium, aluminum, cooper and iron, among others atoms, were introduced in the silicate. Cements having higher amounts of beta-Ca2SiO4 present great interest due to the possibility of reducing energy and raw-material consumption. On the other hand, a limiting aspect that limits large-scale use of beta-Ca2SiO4 is its kinetic behavior, since it hydrates slower than Ca3SiO5, the major component of Portland cement. The goal of this project is the study of the synthesis condition of these calcium silicates. It will be studied the effect of particle size, time and heating temperature, among others. Also, it will be investigated the hydration process of these silicates in order to make possible its application in civil construction. (AU)
