Abstract

The occurrence of residual pharmaceuticals in the environment may take the adverse effect, as in aquatic organisms as in terrestrial. The pharmaceuticals, both the human and the veterinarian use, are absorbed by the organism and are subject of metabolic reactions and a significant amount of these substances, as the original as its metabolites, are excreted. The concern with the fate of these residual pharmaceuticals is increasing, mainly with regard to the evaluation of ambient risk. The occurrence of these residues, mainly in superficial waters and systems of supplying, is being object of studies in diverse countries, mainly in Europe. As a result of this increasing concern, the present project has for objectives to determine the occurrence of residual pharmaceuticals in superficial waters of the Piracicaba (SP) system of water supply. The samples will be collected in the two producing systems: the Piracicaba River and the Corumbataí. The pharmaceuticals to be tracked will belong to the category of antibiotics and hormones. For the detention of residual pharmaceuticals in superficial waters described methods in literature will be used, extraction in solid phase and, in some cases, derivatization of the substance and subsequent determination for chromatography through HPLC/MS, GC/MS or GC-MS/MS.
