Influence of different root caries removal methods on the dentin substrate and on glass ionomer restorations

Abstract

The dentistry development and the greater access to dental treatment have increased the number of old people holders of natural dentition. Thus, the amount of exposed root surfaces, due to physiological or pathological processes, also increased, making these areas more susceptible and vulnerable to the caries process. In order to find out more effective treatments for root caries, new methods have been proposed, with emphasis on the use of high intensity lasers. Thus, the aim of this research will be to evaluate the influence of different root caries removal methods on the dentin substrate and on glass ionomer restorations. For both, root caries will be induced using a microbiological model. Then, these lesions (25 samples per group) will be removed with burs in low speed (control), with Er, Cr: YSGG laser under 3 different power densities, and with the excavator. After, 20 samples per group will be restored with glass ionomer. Following, 10 samples will be submitted to a microleakage test (quantitative analysis), and the other 10 samples per group will be adhesive test. The other 10 samples will be used for assessing the microhardness of dentin at different depths, as well as the analysis of remained dentin on light microscopy.
