Abstract
The demand for periodontal plastic surgeries has increased in the last years. It is estimated that 50% of the adult population in Brazil and U.S.A. present gingival recessions, what explains the search for aesthetical procedures. Surgeries for root coverage are indicated because they decrease bacterial biofilm retention, tooth hypersensitivity and the occurrence of dental caries in root, and also for patient's aesthetical complaints. Tobacco consumption has recently been considered one of the factors that predispose to the occurrence of gingival recessions. Thus, the search for these aesthetical procedures tends to increase, because there is a high prevalence of smokers all over the world, and they present more recessions than non-smokers. However, many studies have shown that smokers are not the ideal patients for surgical treatments, because they have less vascularization, lower activity of neutrophils and fibroblasts, decreased production of inflammatory mediators and antibodies; which leads to worse periodontal healing, worse clinical results and higher occurrence of complications. The development of techniques and procedures to minimize the adverse effects of the tobacco and improve the results of different therapies is one of the possibilities for periodontal research, although we should always stimulate the patient to quit the use of tobacco. The purpose of this study is to compare the surgical technique of Langer & Langer with that described by Barros et al., evaluating root coverage in smokers, analyzing clinical, laboratory and histomorphometric parameters.
