The geomorphologic cartography on coastal areas: a discussion of possibilities and restrictions

Abstract

Sao Paulo state coast is characterized by the intense tourism that produces a high alteration degree caused by the anthropic activities. In this context, it is very important to analyse the environmental quality of this sector of the state. For such analysis, the geomorphologic aspects are essential for they constitute the physical substrate on which these activities act. So, the cartography of the coastal geomorphologic forms is indispensable, however the technical proceedings for the preparation of these cartographical documents still deserve studies that systematize and value the suggestions there are at the bibliographical directions. In that way, the main objective of this research consists in analysing the technical proceedings proposed by several authors for the cartography of the coastal areas geomorphologic forms and, from this analysis, pointing to the more convenient ones in agreement with the scale and the forms that exist in the research area. The area to be investigated includes the south sector of Sao Paulo coast, in the scale of 1:250.000, and sectors of the city of Mongagua in a scale of larger detail. The results will be analysed considering the principles of the General Systems Theory. The obtained morphographic data will be presented in three different maps being used, for each one, the symbologies proposed by each author, like Argento (1995), Nunes et al (1994) and Tricart (1965). So, these maps will be compared and the conceptions and symbologies, considered more appropriate for the mapping of the south coast of Sao Paulo, will be pointed. The cartographical representation of the Mongagua sectors will make possible to discuss the subject of the scale and graphic effectiveness of the symbology in complex sceneries of Sao Paulo coast.
