Abstract
By means of this project we envisage to establish a basis to continue the research and development of a comprehensive chemical assimilation system for the CCATT-BRAMS numerical environmental model. The impact of South American fires on atmospheric chemistry has long been recognized. In spite of the continuous progress of fire satellite products, quantitative information on aerosol and trace gas emissions for atmospheric models remain insufficient. A significant reduction of these uncertainties is expected by advanced assimilation techniques of satellite and in-situ observations into the model. In August 2006 an aerosol and trace gas assimilation system development for the CCATT-BRAM atmospheric environmental model (now with reactive chemistry mechanism) was initiated within the Modeling of the Atmosphere and its Interfaces Group (GMAI) at INPE. A considerable improvement of the model chemistry performance is expected by these assimilation activities, which will allow fire aerosol and trace gas formation and their transport in the southern hemisphere and contribute to a better performance of the chemical weather forecast of CPTEC / INPE.These studies will also build a basis for using the model on a climate scale in the framework of CCST / INPE's Earth System Model developments.
