Histologic and histomorphometric monitoring of bone healing process around self-drilling orthodontic miniscrews, subjected or not to immediate loading, in rabbit tibiae

Abstract

Orthodontic miniscrews are temporary devices installed during the treatment as skeletal anchorage, which allow orthodontic movements on three spacial plans, favoring the malocclusion correction. The purpose of this study will be describe the initial healing process around self-drilling orthodontic miniscrews, sterilizated by the researchers, subjected or not to immediate loading. A hundred forty four self-drilling orthodontic miniscrews (TOMAS, Dentaurum, Germany) will be inserted in the tibiae of eighteen New Zealand White rabbits. Orthodontic load (50 cN) will be applied immediately after miniscrew insertion, by Remanium® (Dentaurum) closed coil spring between the implant pairs. Four rabbits will be sacrified in each of the four times, days 15, 21, 30 and 60, and two animals will be sacrified on day 0 performing the control group. After these periods of osseointegration, all screws and surrounding bone will be removed and microsections will be prepared. Digital images of hard-tissue around the screw will be captured and analyzed histologically, histomorphometrically and under fluorescent microscopy, for characterization of healing process with and without loading.
