Violence committed by teachers as reported by their victims: a structure of the professional habitus from Brazilian teachers

Abstract

This project is a follow-up to our previous studies, particularly those we have been developing within the last ten years. Therefore, this work requires some explanation concerning methodological procedures adopted earlier. In our previous studies, a discussion was established regarding, to some extent, the structuring nature of the pedagogic work carried out in classroom by the teacher, specifically the task of teaching. At the same time, we reflected on the work required from the pupils in the classroom in order to learn. In these studies (SILVA, 2002, 2003, 2004a, 2004b, 2005, 2007, 2008) we referred to such nature as teacher's habitus, and pupils' habitus the work carried out by the pupils. The notion of habitus adopted in our studies comes from Bourdieu (1983a, 1983b, 1983c, 1989, 1992, 1996). In this project we will analyze: would one of the structuring structured structures of the teacher's habitus from Brazilian teachers be the violence committed by the teachers against their pupils? The data source will come from the reports on schooling produced in 2004, 2007 and 2010 by the students of the discipline "Didática II", during the undergraduate course in Pedagogy from Faculdade de Ciências e Letras - Campus Araraquara - UNESP, that is, approximately 240 texts with 10 pages each, on average. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted with the authors of sources produced in 2010. The sources from both groups will be equally analyzed and their data will be compared to each other. The data will be organized/categorized by using the technique known as Content Analysis according to Bardin (1977) and will be composed of only, in this case, explicit information about "the situation" and "the violence type" committed by teacher(s) against pupil(s). The underlying principles will continue to be the ideas from Pierre Bourdieu, especially the notion of habitus. (AU)
