Validation of three Burnout scales for students: a trans-cultural study with Portuguese and Brazilian college students

Abstract

The objective of this work is to perform three-scale Burnout measuring on the transcultural adaptation in students in line with the new orthographic agreement established between the Portuguese speaking countries, in addition to study their reliability and validity. The sample will consist of higher-education student volunteers, enrolled in Portuguese and Brazilian institutions. For sample characterization, the socio-demographic information will be assembled and for the assessment of the Burnout state the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-SS), the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) and the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) will be used. These will be adapted and applied to the students and will be prepared in Portuguese according to Face and Content Validity criteria. A web site will be prepared for the socio-demographic questionnaire and inventories. These questionnaires will be available for online completion during 7 months. A pilot study will be prepared to measure the instruments' adequacy of the application technique. To estimate the reliability of the inventories the linear weighted Kappa statistic and Cronbach's alpha coefficient will be conducted. The factorial validity of the models from the proposed three scales (MBI-SS, OLBI, CBI) will be assessed by a confirmatory factor analysis. The convergent and discriminant validity of the instruments will be estimated.The concurrent validity of the instruments will be examined by correlational analysis between the scores obtained with the scales. Will be held multigrupos confirmatory factor analysis to assess the invariance of the model in the brazilian and portuguese samples. (AU)
