Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis and represents a major cause of disability in the elderly. Patients with OA frequently present a diminished quadriceps strenght, altered proprioception and a tendency for falls. Therefore, quadriceps streghtening represents a logical target in the treatment of knee OA. Since creatine supplementation maximizes muscular strenghtening in patients under resistance training, it may improve non-pharmacological therapy. The reduction in the rehabilitation time may lead to a great impact in public health through the optimization of financial resources and the early return of the patient to his daily activities. In the proposed study, we will evaluate thirty female patients distributed in two groups: creatine supplementation or placebo. Physical training will be performed three times a week per twelve weeks. Before and after the intervention, the patients will be evaluated by clinical tests, body composition by whole body densitometry and a minimally invasive muscle biopsy to obtain muscle sample to study muscle hypertrophy and atrophy pathways. The understanding of the trophic mechanisms envolved in the physiopathology of this disease and its possible alteration due to the proposed intervention will bring important advances in the treatment of osteoarthritis.
