Abstract

The Paraíba do Sul River Basin is located in the region with the highest level of urban and industrial development in the country, geografically isolated from the other basins. It has been suffering the impact of anthropic activity, threatening with extinction a noble endemic fish species, the "surubim-do-Paraiba", Steindachneridion parahybae. The impact of the environmental degradation originated in the beginning of human occupation, as well as with the construction of dams for the generation of electricity and/or water uptake, without a proper conservation management. Because it is critically endangered, only a complete change in this reality will make the preservation of freshwater ecosystems possible, recovering and protecting the genetic heritage of future generations. At first sight, the development of the induced reproduction technique involving the quality of the gametes may seem easy, elementary and simplistic, but it is not. Little is known about the reproduction of that "surubim", whose broodfishes coming from extremely impacted areas must be produced "urgently". Considering the facts mentioned above, it is our intention to study the characteristics of the semen through subjective methods associated to more precise ones (computational methods), as well as its conservation during short stocking periods and at different temperatures. Furthermore, it is also essential to improve the techniques that make the use of oocytes and eggs viable, characterizing them morphologically, before and after hormonal induction, assess the reproductive potential (fertilization, hatching and larvae), as well as the biotechnology of cryopreservation of these gametes and future embryos, parameters that are usually employed in commercial fish farms, and which will be validated here by science.
