Abstract

Our work seeks to understand the changes that Carnival and its melodies underwent during the last decades of the nineteenth century (particularly around 1870) until mid-1940 and the correlation of these changes with a political and social project of urban space organization subject to the liberal ideology propagated and encouraged by the Dual Revolution in Europe. Such research also aims to contribute to the development of a collective and inter-institutional project entitled "Art in Translation, between Brazil and London", which will discuss music, film and theater and have USP (University of São Paulo), UNESP (São Paulo State University) and King's College London as participant institutions.
