Nutritional value of sugarcane treated with calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide

Abstract

Amongst the alternatives to minimize inadequate animal nutrition, sugar cane is distinguished enters tropical grasses used as roughage. Despite the increasing number of producers adopting the treatment of the sugar cane with micro processed whitewash, in the form of CaO or Ca(OH)2, there are no data in literature regarding the dose to be used and the necessary time of reaction for a significant effect, mainly, on the quality and the nutritive value of the sugar cane submitted to these treatments. The development of this research has as objectives: evaluate the effect of application of different levels of CaO and Ca(OH)2 (0.25; 0.5; 1.0; 2.0 and 4.0%) on the nutritional quality of sugar cane (experiment 1); evaluate the consumption, digestibilidade and performance of heifers receiving diets based on hydrolyzed sugar cane. Eighteen crossbred heifers (holstein x zebu) will be used fed with sugar cane in nature, hydrolyzed with CaO and hydrolyzed with Ca(OH)2 as roughages sources, constituting 70% of the diets (experiment 2); evaluate the consumption, digestibilidade and performance of ovine ,receiving diets based on hydrolyzed sugar cane. Eighteen ovine fed with sugar cane in nature, hydrolyzed with CaO and hydrolyzed with Ca(OH)2 as roughages sources, constituting 70% of the diets (experiment 3). (AU)
