Antioxidant evaluation of natural phenolic compounds and application in topical formulations for iontophoresis in vitro

Abstract

The use of antioxidants in topical applications looks promising, but a lot of studies still need to be made. Recent researches suggest that combinations of different antioxidants seem to have synergistic effects and thus better efficacy when compared with the use of an antioxidant isolated. Getting efficiency in topical antioxidants administration against free radicals from the skin, it is essential to ensure the stability of the final formulation, since antioxidants are very unstable and can easily oxidize and become inactive before reaching its site of action. Furthermore, the antioxidants must be properly absorbed into the skin to reach deeper layers of the skin in active form, and remain there long enough to cause beneficial effects. The aim of this study is to evaluate compounds or mixtures of compounds with antioxidant activity through the techniques ORAC, DPPH, ABTS, FRAP and BETA-CAROTENE, in order to select the best compound, or rather mixture of compounds with antioxidant activity for the development of a topical formulation and studies of stability, permeation and skin retention of natural active in pig skin, combining the technique of iontophoresis. This project aims at the union of Professors with special studying degrees in different areas, and different research institutions, seeking knowledge and the formation of a new working group, multidiscplinar and promising for pharmaceutical and cosmetic areas.
