In vitro biomechanical analysis of esthetical zirconia abutments, personalized and not-personalized, submitted to thermo-mechanical cycling

Abstract

The loss of teeth, with functional and esthetic impairment, makes professionals and patients seek alternatives to replace them. Therefore, dental implants have become a viable treatment option in order to obtain adequate oral rehabilitation. The main factors of failures of this type of treatment are: marginal bone loss and instability of the prosthetic connection. Thus, morse taper interfaces were developed to improve some properties of these implants such as improving the fit between the implant and prosthetic abutment, minimize peri-implant bone resorption; improve the mechanical stability and prevent loosening of the abutment. Actually, aesthetic has become an aspect of great importance in dentistry, and abutments of zirconia are an interesting option to overcome aesthetic requisites, not provided by metallic abutments. Studies evaluating fit and strength of aesthetic abutments have increased, but many studies evaluated aesthetic abutments for external and internal hex interface implants, and there is little information about the biomechanical behavior of aesthetic abutments of zirconia for morse taper implants. This study aims to evaluate the fracture resistance and the effect of mechanical cycling associated to thermal cycling on aesthetic abutments of zirconia for morse taper implants, with and without prosthetic preparation.
