Abstract

Although our knowledge on wetlands has recently increased, it is still partial in many aspects. The Pantanal wetland is considered as the world's largest continental wetland and consists of a mosaic of quite contrasted regions from a geomorphological, pedological and geochemical point of view. In a previous project, we focussed on the chemical variability of soils and waters at different scales, from the upper Paraguay basin to the lakes of the Nhecolândia, one of the main sub-regions of the Pantanal. The emphasis was also placed on the analysis of the processes responsible for the chemical variability, as well as the prioritization of these processes. This new project is a direct continuity and it is divided into three work-packages. The first aims to acquire a more comprehensive data set on hydrochemical variability of water supplying the Pantanal floodplain. Water samples will be collected more systematically to understand the variations within a hydrological year. The analysis will be extended to trace elements, and coupled with the acquisition of the flow measurements. The goal is to understand the role of the floodplain on the dynamics of the chemical elements.The second action is to study the soil system in two chemically contrasted regions, on the one hand the Nhecolândia, and the other the Nabileque. The third action is to develop a typology of the saline lakes of the Nhecolândia, based on complementary and relevant physico-chemical and biogeochemical considerations. (AU)
