Abstract

Oral mucositis and hyposalivation/xerostomia are dose-limited debilitating consequences from antineoplastic treatment. Several literature articles have shown the positive effects from different phototherapy modalities on the treatment of these complications, however, the action mechanism of these phototherapies upon oral mucosa and salivary glands is yet not totally known. Thus, the aim of this study is to compare, through biochemical and histological analysis, different photherapies on the treatment of oral mucositis and salivary glands hypofunction induced by two injections of 5-Fluorouracil (100 mg/kg and 65 mg/kg, respectively) in Syrian (golden) hamsters. The animals will be divided into two major groups, control and experimental, which will be subdivided in group C: anesthesia and CQ: anesthesia and chemotherapy/oral mucositis, for control group and in group L: anesthesia, chemotherapy/oral mucositis and phototherapy (LED, 1,2 J/cm², 1.2 J of total energy), LA: anesthesia, chemotherapy/oral mucositis and phototherapy (high-power laser, 10 J/cm², 10 J of total energy), LB: anesthesia, chemotherapy/oral mucositis and phototherapy (low-power laser, 6 J/cm², 1.2 J of total energy) and LG: anesthesia, chemotherapy and phototherapy on salivary gland areas (low-power laser, 5 J/cm2 on salivary glands) for experimental group. The oral mucositis will be induced by slots on oral mucosa which will be performed after chemoterapy treatment. The oral mucositis will be analyzed through a clinical scale and after 5, 10 and 15 days, the animals will be sacrificed and the oral mucosa and parotid and submandibular glands will be removed for histological and biochemical analysis.
