Abstract Diabetes mellitus causes a series of biochemical and histological changes in the salivary glands of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Furthermore, our group has investigated the effect of laser irradiation upon salivary glands and our data demonstrated that this therapy would be helpfull in cases of hypofunction of the salivary glands and xerostomia. However, the action mechanism of this therapy on the glandular tissue is unclear. In this sense, continuing our studies, the present study aims the effect of laser irradiation on calmodulin concentration. For this purpose, 30 Wistar rats will be divided into 3 groups: C0 (control) : simulation of irradiation, D0 (diabetic) simulation of irradiation, D20 : 20 J/cm2. The diode laser (660 nm), 100 mW of power, will be used in areas corresponding to the parotid and submandibular glands. The rats will be euthanized 24 h after irradiation and salivary glands removed for biochemical (calmodulin concentration)analysis. | |
