Abstract

Human aging is occurring rapidly. With advancing age occurs the functional decline of the constituent systems of the human body, being common to decreased muscle strength, leading to changes in static and dynamic balance and, consequently, to the falls. Studies have investigated the manipulation of somatosensory information in postural control strategy using the soft touch in a rigid and stationary surface, indicating that sensory information and motor action are closely related to the task of keeping the body in a certain position and that additional sensory information may be used continuously, reducing the body sway, and consequently falls. The objectives of the study are to investigate the effect of using additional sensory information in postural control and mobility of elderly people with and without a history of falls. Will be evaluated 40 elderly separated into two groups: Group 1 without history of falls and Group 2 with a history of falls, residents in the city of Marilia, SP. The static equilibrium will be assessed using a force platform in four different situations according to the visual stimulus and the condition of the surface. Mobility will be assessed by the Time Up and Go test. An adhesive bandage, with a width of 2 cm, just below the patella, attached to the patient's skin will be used as additional sensory stimulation. After verification of normality and homogeneity of data, will be adopted the appropriate statistical tests to compare variables between groups. In all statistical tests will be adopted the significance level of p <0.05. (AU)
