Abstract

The first aim of this randomized controlled clinical trial is to evaluate the effectiveness of two periodontal non-surgical therapies: conventional non-surgical periodontal therapy protocol versus one-stage full-mouth disinfection (FMD) with the use of different antimicrobial agents. The main sample will consist of 90 subjects with mild/moderate chronic periodontitis randomly allocated in 6 groups. Longitudinal clinical examinations including PPD, CAL, PI and GI will be performed during the trial as to compare the effectiveness of scaling and root planing as well as FMD. Qualitative/quantitative evaluations of oral microorganisms such as A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. gingivalis, T. forsythia, T. denticola, S.oralis e A. naeslundii will be done. Immunological assays to measure TNF-±, IL-1², ²-defensina 2, ²-defensina 3 in crevicular fluid will be performed. Two more analysis will be carried in the saliva: total protein and arginase activity. Blood samples will be taken from subjects to analyze the presence of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Finally, anxiety of the treatment and intensity and duration of pain after scaling and root planing will be assessed. Results will be analyzed through measures of central tendency, confidence interval and standard deviation for the descriptive data. To consider the final variables as well as variables of treatment, parametric and non-parametric statistics will be used. Measures of relative risk to analyze possible drop-outs using an intention to treat (ITT) analysis will be included. (AU)
