Periodontal treatment and metabolic control in type 2 Diabetic patients

Abstract

The literature have not established the mechanisms linking inflammatory periodontal diseases and diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMT2). This study aims to evaluate the impact of periodontal therapy on glycemic control in patients with T2DM. This study is a randomized clinical trial with 120 DMT2 patients sample. Individuals will be divided into two groups two and receive two different forms of periodontal treatment. One group will receive intensive periodontal therapy (IPT) and the other, supragingival periodontal therapy (TPS). Blood sample for glucose analysis will be collected to evaluate the glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), advanced glycation end product (carboxymethyl-lysine), and some inflammatory biomarkers, such as inflammatory biomarker tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-±), C-reactive protein (CRP), leucocyte count, interleukin 6 (il-6) and interleukin 1 ± and ². The analysis will be made at baseline, after two, six and twelve months of the end of periodontal treatment. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola Tanerella forsythia will also be analyzed at the same times described, just to evaluate the effectiveness of periodontal treatment. During the study, diet questionnaires will be used in order to better control and avoid a possible bias. (AU)
