Abstract

Pregnancy causes various alterations in a woman, which interfere in her body as a whole. To guarantee that pregnant women have better assistance, the actions of different professionals are required during the pre-natal period, in order to assure the complete attendance envisaged by the Family Health Strategy. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the knowledge and oral health practices of a group of pregnant women attended by the Family Health Strategy (Estratégia Saúde da Família - ESF) and their relationship with the history of caries and periodontal disease. The project will be developed in the 27 health units of ESF in the municipality of Picos-PI, Brazil. To compose the sample, 300 pregnant women will be selected and divided into 3 groups, according to their gestational trimester. Those considered for the study will be in the age range between 18 and 25 years and under prenatal care since the beginning of pregnancy. A questionnaire will be applied, based on the model proposed by Venâncio (2006), composed of 34 questions, seeking to identified their oral health knowledge and practices. Afterwards, intraoral exams will be performed with the aid of a WHO periodontal probe and mouth mirror. Caries history will be evaluated by obtaining the DMFT index and treatment needs; and periodontal disease, by the Community Periodontal Index (CPI), based on the codes and criteria recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO, 1999).
