Abstract

Dental problems and prosthesis use may result in discomfort and disability contributing to significant changes in the selection of food to be consumed by the elderly. These problems often promotes food avoidance, specially the intake of high nutritional value food and, in some cases, their replacement by other high-calorie and easy to chew food, inducing them to loss or weight gain resulting in variations in the nutritional status. The poor consumption of certain nutrients and vitamins can be also a key factor in the trend toward frailty, emergent condition among the elderly. Oral health seems to be connected to life quality and to its social and functional aspects. The aim of this study is to evaluate determinants of oral health and oral status as a predictor of general health among a cohort of independently living older adults residents in Carlos Barbosa, RS. The sample will consist of those individuals that participated in the first study about the elderly population of Carlos Barbosa held in 2004, being contacted by letter or telephone and invited to participate in the study trough the Carlos Barbosa's Elderly Groups. The measures comprised a questionnaire with information about socio-demographic, behavioral, access to services, medical history, depression, physical activity, oral examination, quality of life, resilience, anthropometric and frailty assessments. Associations with the outcome will be assessed using multinomial logistic regression, adjusting for confounding variables. All the analyses will be accomplished by the PASW program (SPSS inc., Chicago, USA). (AU)
