Association between food patterns, body composition, sarcopenia and frailty in community-living older adults

Abstract

In public health for a better understanding of reality and food health determinants, studies of food patterns are carried to establish relationships between nutrition and health processes especially in elderly individuals, who in general present multimorbidities, polypharmacy, socioeconomic and psychological factors, which lead to low food variety and high nutritional risk. Thus, the present study aims to identify and describe the food patterns (a priori and a posteriori) of the elderly in the community and evaluate their association with body composition, sarcopenia and frailty. The present proposal extends an ongoing study entitled: "Evaluation of the prevalence of micronutrient deficiency in elderly people living in cities in the region of Campinas - SP". The estimated sample is 600 elderly people enrolled in the Family Health Strategy (ESF) in the municipalities of Campinas, Limeira and Piracicaba, proposing additional measures and other specific objectives, separated into two parts, one involving the data of the total sample and another with objectives for a sub-sample. Personal and socioeconomic data, health and nutritional conditions are collected. From 24-hour recall data, a posteriori eating patterns will be identified, using principal components analysis, and a priori, using the Dietary Inflammatory Index. The associations between food patterns and body composition, sarcopenia and frailty will be evaluated. For the present project, it is proposed to include an ultrasound image (US) as a direct measurement of body composition for the sub-sample of 120 elderly, as well as blood pressure measurement, and the triglyceride and C-reactive protein dosage in the blood to characterize the metabolic syndrome.
