Abstract

The main objective of the present research is to explore and describe the relationships among evaluations of the Olympics organizers (Brazilian government and the Rio organizing committee for Olympic Games), perceptions of legacy, and popular support for hosting the Olympic Games in Brazil. Literature argues that without listening the opinion of the main stakeholders is impossible to plan and organize a sport mega-event which is going to leave important legacy to the local community. This project argues that popular support is fundamental to organize the Olympic Games. Two theories have been commonly used to explain people support or not a city or country in hosting sport mega-events: Social representation theory (Moscovici, 1981) and social exchange theory (Blau, 1964; Gouldner, 1960). To investigate popular support for the Olympic Games in Rio, three models where proposed. These are going to be statistically tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). The antecedents of these models are evaluations of the organizers and perceptions of legacy. Two of these models are mediation models, which consider perceptions of legacy as a mediator between evaluations of the organizers and popular support. The population of interest of this research is the population of the host city, Rio de Janeiro. (AU)
