Abstract Recent mega events in Brazil (World Cup and Olympic Games) have shown the country as a potential economy to the world; however, these events have not become fully profitable, when it comes to the legacy they leave in the host cities. Along with the desire of being hosts for so important international events, Brazilians face, nevertheless, a constant doubt on the future all these projects may build. The main question of this research is what kind of city the Olympic Games generate, through the analysis of architectural and urban planning projects. The research period abroad seeks to understand current urban design trends applied in European cities more deeply (and especially in Olympic cities), making a parallel to the urban developments for Rio de Janeiro's Olympics. The study questions whether projects in Rio are aiming a global sustainable city or if they are aiming a momentary, fleeting reality disregarding the main urban legacy. In addition, it discusses what kind of relationship between the city and its citizens the Games in 2016 are shaping in Rio and essays a comparison about how some European Olympic cities could become reference in terms of their new urban and architectural developments.
