Abstract

Cancer is considered a public health problem in many countries. Despite the present scenario, it is estimated that cancer incidence will increase 50% by 2020. Interestingly, one third of all cancers could be prevented and one third curable by health initiatives and public's politics such as health dietary habits implementation. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third most prevalent with increased mortality in the world. Because of its unfavourable prognosis and survival and the lack of effective treatment, prevention is the most appropriate way to control the HCC incidence. Most chronic liver diseases beginning with inflammation, fibrosis and progresses into cirrhosis, condition of increased HCC risk. Hepatotoxic agents such as carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and dietinitrosamina (DEN) are classical forms of fibrosis induction. Considering the close relationship between fibrosis and hepatocarcinogenesis, it is important to identify substances able to reduce the main features of the process in order to decrease HCC incidence. Vitamin D (VD) is essential to bone physiology. However, several other cells can synthesize and / or be stimulated by VD. Thus, there is much interest to associate VD deficiency to other chronic diseases development. Epidemiological studies suggest that VD levels may be associated with several cancers. Considering that the liver plays an important role in VD metabolism, liver disorders may increase the risk of developing metabolic changes associated with VD deficiency such as cancer. Thus, this project will be conducted to pioneering evaluate the effect of VD supplementation on fibrosis / hepatocarcinogenesis induced by DEN and CCl4 in rats. (AU)
