The use of Grindcare® device in sleep bruxism diagnosis

Abstract

The aim of this study is to verify the reliability of the Grindcare® device as a diagnostic tool for sleep bruxism (SB) compared to polysomnography. Still, the secondary objectives are: to determine the appropriate cutoff in the number of electromyographic events per night of sleep for the SB diagnosis, to evaluate the reliability of the questionnaire and clinical examination of Sb front of the diagnosis made by polysomnography. For that 20 participants will be selected: 10 patients of the Orofacial Pain outpatient , School of Dentistry of Bauru, São Paulo (FOB-USP) who meet the SB clinical and polysomnographic criteria proposed by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM, 2005) and Lavigne et al. (1996) and 10 healthy volunteers (control group). All participants will be submitted to anamnesis and physical examination, use of the Grindcare® device and polysomnography. Descriptive analysis of variables will be held in check for possible associations or correlations between them. Specificity, sensitivity and positive predictive value will be calculated using the variables resulting from the use of Grindcare® device compared to data obtained from polysomnography. The test Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) will be used to create graphical representation of curves of sensitivity and specificity to determine the appropriate cutoff in the number of electromyographic events per night of sleep for the diagnosis of SB.
