Abstract
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is the most severe form of leishmaniasis. The disease affects mainly the cells of the Mononuclear Phagocitic System (MPS) in bone marrow, spleen, liver, lungs, intestine and skin and can be fatal if not treated. The incidence about 90% of VL cases is concentrated in five countries, including Brazil. Dogs are considered the main domestic reservoir of Leishmania (L.) infantum chagasi, constituting the main link in the chain of parasite transmission. In endemic areas, part of the dogs acquired the infection and develops disease immediately and part develops disease later and another part of the dogs never develop the disease. Generally, asymptomatic dogs exhibit resistance phenotype associated with the cellular immune response and high control of parasites, by the other side, symptomatic dogs exhibit phenotype of susceptibility associated with suppression of cellular immunity and exacerbation of the humoral immune response. Identification of genetic markers associated with different profiles of immune response can be useful for elucidation of the factors associated with maintenance of the asymptomatic infection or full manifestation of the disease in canine VL (CVL). Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the cellular immune response and to identify genetic markers associated with different profiles of cellular immunity and clinical forms of CVL in dogs from São Paulo State.
