Abstract

Many problems can involve the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and its structures, suggesting a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). This study will evaluate the effect of low level laser in electromyographic activity, occlusal contacts, jaw movements and pain in adolescents with temporomandibular disorders. Will be assessed all adolescents between 15 and 18 years for both genders in Associação Esporte Solidário (AES). All participants who are able to participate in the research will apply the questionnaire and clinical examination RDC-TMD, for research and diagnosis of TMD. From the clinical findings, the adolescents will be classified in Group without TMD and Group with TMD. Patients with TMD will be divided into six groups, where three groups will receive treatment with low level laser therapy and one placebo treatment. The areas to be treated will be the TMJ region, masseter and temporal and mixed treatment. Data will be submitted to descriptive statistical analysis. To evaluate the association of categorical variables the Chi-square test and Fisher's exact will be used, for comparison of the electromyographic signals the Student t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) will be used and for analysis of the correlation between continuous variables the Pearson correlation test will be applied.
