Abstract

Background: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), musculoskeletal pain condition of the masticatory system is the leading cause of non-dental pain in the orofacial region and has become increasingly common among children and adolescents. The same has been observed with other forms of pain like fibromyalgia (FM), chronic musculoskeletal pain syndrome characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, poor sleep, chronic headaches, irritable bowel syndrome. In adults, comorbidity relationship between TMD and FM is already well established. However, little is known about the association between TMD and FM in children and adolescents. Objective: To investigate the association between fibromyalgia and painful TMD in adolescents after proper identification and adjustment of confounders. Methods: This is an analytical, observational, cross-sectional study, comparing adolescents with and without painful TMD. The sample will consist of 700 adolescents, 12 to 14 years old, enrolled in public and private schools in the city of Araraquara. Diagnosis and classification of painful TMD will be through the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders, Axis I. Assessment of FM will be based on criteria proposed by Yunus and Masi in 1985. For sample characterization and identification of possible confounding variables, variables such as gender, race, economic status, depressive symptoms and headache will be also collected. To study the associations will be applied the chi-square test and the Student t test or Mann-Whitney U. Regression models will be used to estimate the association (odds ratio) between painful TMD and FM, correcting by demographic, psychosocial changes, and headache.
