Abstract

Introduction: The painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in adolescents has been the focus of several studies due to the impact in the lives of individuals, including learning difficulties and poor social interaction. The presence of painful and non-painful comorbidities, contribute to the amplification of pain and decrease the pain threshold. Objective: The aim of the present study is to investigate the presence of comorbid pain and your relationship with painful TMD. Our hypothesis is that the presence of such comorbid conditions increase the risk for the presence and severity of painful TMD in adolescents. Methods: We will conduct an observational, cross- sectional study. The sample will be composed by 300 adolescents enrolled in public and private schools from the city of Araraquara. The socioeconomic questionnaire, the Questionnaire for Quality of Life Evaluation (PedsQL") and the Child Depression Inventory, will be answered by the parents of the participants. The Criteria for Diagnosis Research of Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) will be used to confirm the diagnosis and classification of TMD. Back pain and pain in another posterior regions will be assessed through the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire. The Medical Condition of the Adolescents Questionnaire will investigate other possible painful comorbidities. Irritable bowel syndrome will be identified following the ROMA criteria. It will also be conducted an intraoral examination to rule out possible confounding factors such as cavities, mucosal lesions and periodontal disease. For univariate study of the associations will be applied the chi-square test and the Student t test or Mann-Whitney U. Regression models will be used to estimate the association among the study conditions. (AU)
