Abstract

Sleep disorders in adolescents are considered a public health problem. Recent studies have been demonstrated that adolescents with sleep disorders have most often painful conditions. Among the painful conditions studied, little is known about the association between Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) pain and sleep disorders, representing a gap in the current literature. Objective: To investigate the association and the temporal relationship between sleep disorders and painful TMD in adolescents. Methods: This is a cross-sectional will compare adolescents with and without TMD pain. The sample will be composed by 464 adolescents, aged 12-14 years old, enrolled in public and private schools in the city of Araraquara. The Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders, axis I, will be used to diagnose and classify the TMD pain. The evaluation of sleep disorders will be subjective by questionnaires Sleep disorders scale for children, sleep behavior, Questionnaire and sleep and pain diary. For sample characterization and identification of possible confounding variables, variables such as gender, race, economic status, pubertal status and depressive symptoms are also collected. For univariate study of the associations will be applied the Chi-square test and the Student T test or Mann-Whitney U. Regression models will be used to estimate the association and the temporal relationship between painful TMD and sleep disorders. (AU)
